The Centre for the Study of Migration and Intercultural Relations (CEMRI), created in 1989, is a research and development unit based at Universidade Aberta (UAb) and accredited and funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
Its main mission is to develop interdisciplinary research and advanced training in the area of migration and intercultural relations in local and global contexts and at national and international level. This mission is highly topical and active, promoting fundamental and applied research, the dissemination of scientific culture, with an emphasis on open public resources and reference journals, the development of postgraduate studies, lifelong learning, the production of materials for distance learning and the provision of services to civil society.
The main strength of this pioneering Centre in the area of migration and intercultural relations lies in the diversity and breadth of its interdisciplinary research, which includes five research areas. These research areas at CEMRI are structured into five Research Groups: Migrations and Cultural Diversities; Intercultural Communication; Women’s Studies – Gender, Society and Culture; Health, Culture and Development; Media and Cultural Mediations.
